OpenOffice.org Clarifies Status of the “OpenOffice Mouse”
November 10, 2009 — Contrary to recent press reports, the OpenOffice.org Community has no plans to ship a multi-button office application mouse by February next year. The “OpenOffice Mouse” demonstrated at the Community’s Conference on 4th November will be produced by WarMouse, an independent company with no business relationship with either the OpenOffice.org Community, or with Sun Microsystems, the owner of the OpenOffice.org trademark.

We very much hope this will clarify things. To be honest, it’s really not that terribly difficult to understand. Blizzard does not produce the World of Warcraft Mouse. SteelSeries does. NCSoft does not produce the Guild Wars mouse. Razer does. And OpenOffice.org does not produce the “OpenOfficeMouse”. Or the OOMouse. Or any mouse of any kind. We have the greatest respect for OpenOffice.org Community and it has never been our intention to imply or otherwise suggest that anyone but WarMouse is responsible for producing “the 18-button freak”.

I just didn’t understand — will WarMouse use OOo trademark for 18-button mouse? I hope you will, but there are rumors that you won’t.

We are still in the process of deciding precisely what we will do in this regard, as our options have been rather dynamic. We will release an announcement regarding this in the near future. Regardless of what our final decision is, we will be certainly include the OpenOffice.org office suite with the mouse, will provide default modes to support the five OpenOffice.org applications, and will release the software as an open source project.
